How to Infuse your Favourite Liquor at Home

Flavoured versions of your favourite drinks cost a premium, but you can make your very own flavoured liquors with just a little imagination. Experiment with new flavours and bottle your favourites for friends and family.

Infusion is the process of placing herbs, spices and fruit into liquor and leaving it to impart its favour. Make sure you wash fruit really well prior to placing it the alcohol. You can strain the fruit out before you mix your drinks using a wire-mesh sieve. Once the fruit has been removed, store the liquor in an airtight container until needed. Here are a couple of our favourite recipes for you to try.

Strawberry Vanilla Vodka

1 cup strawberries
1 vanilla bean pod
500 ml vodka

Wash the strawberries and pat dry with a paper towel. Remove the green stem and slice them in half. Place vodka in a 1 litre mason jar and add the strawberries. Slice the vanilla bean pod lengthwise and add to the bottle. Seal the mason jar and give it a shake. Store in a cool, dark place for 3 days. Give your strawberry vodka a taste. If you like the taste, strain out the fruit and vanilla. If you want a stronger taste, leave it a little longer.

Jalapeno Lime Tequila

1 large Jalapeno pepper
1 lime
500 ml tequila

Wash the Jalapeño pepper and cut it into thin slices. Rinse the lime and cut it into wedges. In a 1 litre mason jar, place the pepper slices and lime wedges and cover with tequila. Shake gently to mix. Store, sealed, in a cool dark place for 4 days.
